I led a project to build a game for seniors with dementia in Singapore. To spark joy and reminiscence for its players, I built empathy with users across cultures, generations, and physical and mental abilities.
In my role as research and design lead, I:
- participated in dementia therapy sessions to understand user challenges.
- reviewed literature on games built for seniors to learn from existing research and different approaches.
- recorded user stories, reviewed National Archives, and visited Singapore’s last surviving mainland village to learn about Singaporean culture and history.
- led multi-disciplinary ideation sessions and created mock-ups and wireframes to communicate ideas.
- built and refined paper prototypes for digital translation with Human-Computer Interaction scientists.
- designed testing protocols, coordinated with testing sites, and facilitated play testing.
- leveraged rigorous testing data to validate design and improve ease of use.
- reported early and often on project progress and findings to stakeholders at Changi General Hospital.
- partnered closely with a developer to deliver a polished high-fidelity product.
- co-authored two academic papers describing design and testing process.
Piece by Piece blends micro- and macrohistories to provide a culturally authentic play experience for seniors. Combining specialist feedback with user insights, seniors can access unfamiliar technology with confidence. The game scored high in patient engagment and showed promise for group reminiscence and intergenerational sharing.
