I designed i-Ready® Building Reading Comprehension, a core reading web app for a large educational technology organization. From kickoff to launch, I balanced the needs of our student users, their teachers, and content authors to create lessons that engage while delivering robust instruction.
In my role as senior interaction designer, I:
- participated in multi-disciplinary ideation sessions and created mock-ups and wireframes to communicate ideas.
- collaborated with designers to create a vision for a clean and consistent student experience.
- collaborated with lesson writers to achieve pedagogical goals through design.
- owned interface and feature design for the lesson reading, activity, and feedback experience.
- built robust functional prototypes to test with students and to guide developer implementation.
- leveraged rigorous testing data to validate design and improve ease of use.
- presented design decisions and gathered feedback from stakeholders.
- defined and reinforced creative direction in content reviews and illustrator feedback, prioritizing culturally responsive and age-appropriate imagery.
- ensured that text, UI, and important graphic elements met WCAG 2.1 AA size and contrast requirements.
- designed keyboard navigation guides for developer implementation in activities.
- reduced flashing and blinking in motion design to avoid triggering photoepileptic seizures.
- partnered closely with developers to deliver a polished high-fidelity product.
- developed a living design system defining guidelines for visual style, interaction, motion, sound, and image content.
i-Ready® Building Reading Comprehension combines best design practice, trusted pedagogical research, and rigorous usability testing to deliver over 100 reading comprehension lessons to students in grades 3 through 8. This award-winning program has improved learning outcomes for millions of students, narrowing the achievement gap in American schools.
